Studying business and economics in college, Matt “mcballa001” Carrier initially got into poker as a hobby. Now, at age 25, he has not only completed his business/econ degree but has also become a skilled PLO player.
Matt got his start playing in friendly home games with no more than a $50 initial deposit. Sensing opportunity, he looked for ways to get better and began spending time on 2+2 and talking with friends about the game. Watching poker videos by many different top players also had a large impact on his game and helped him improve to the next level. For Matt, the most critical aspects of the game are tilt and the player’s mentality. However successful he becomes, he knows that these are the biggest difference makers and must be focused on constantly.
With standards as high as his, it’s no wonder Matt describes his game as a constant work-in- progress. Currently he plays 5/10-25/50, and has done so for several years, giving him incredibly valuable experience. Still, poker is not the end-all be-all of his existence. For now, he plans on a return to school and a slow transition out of poker. But not to worry – he plans to keep his hand in enough to stay in shape. Coaching
