When one hears the name James Ma, they may think "James who?" But I wouldn't get too comfortable with the thought because for this 22 year old playing levels at 5/10NL and 10/20NL is just everyday routine.

The tale of this unknown began with $5 SNG and 50NL between him and his friends. As James tells it everyone had no idea what they were doing, playing a tight-aggressive game was all it took to win. From there James played $5 Omaha hi/low SNG's and NLHE SNG's where he slowly made his way up to higher SNG limits. However, it wasn't until he started playing 100NL that his game begin to really improve and his bankroll continued to increase.

Life wasn't always so fascinating for James as he first worked the graveyard shift as a stock boy for Superstore. It was a tough job and knowing that there are people who do that for living makes him just that much more appreciative to have poker in his life. Now, not only does James credit his past days as a stock boy for his success in poker, but of course his Asian bloodline.

"Asians were born to gamble and it's proven by the hit film 'God of Gamblers'," says James.

So, what does the future hold for James Ma? Well if you ask him, he wants to see a BA degree in business with a concentration in marketing from Simon Fraser University, where he is currently in his fourth year, and hopes to continue working with LeggoPoker. He also plans on learning more about tournament play and Omaha, learning to endure the swings that comes with it.

Coaching

I have coached a couple players a couple years ago, but since then I have been focusing on improving my own game and moving through the limits. However, I really enjoy coaching and want to get back into it again at this time. I love teaching others and helping others improve their game and results. I have tutored students in high school and all of which were able to have significant improvements in their grades. I never talk down to students and will always show them the same respect they show for me.

From the videos I have put out so far, I hope that gives you an idea of how I would explain different concepts to you and I would be able to answer any questions you have more thoroughly and help you plug leaks in your game or open leaks in others games.

Coaching Philosophy:

Through my coaching, I will improve my student's knowledge and confidence of the game by teaching the thought processes I go through and the reasoning behind the plays I am making. A lot of the time there are special situations where I do an unusual move based pretty much solely on game flow or a particular read. These spots do not come up very often in videos and can be covered better through coaching.

Through sweat sessions I can help the student keep better track of game flow and how to adjust their play for maximizing profits. I really like to stress learning poker theory to my students because with the proper knowledge the student will rarely feel lost in most difficult situations. I believe the students will benefit the most by customizing my coaching sessions for each student. I will focus on fixing the weak points of the student's game and to teach the student to exploit the weaknesses of the regulars at the limit they play so that they can start crushing the limits.

Coaching Method

For the 1st session, we can go over a few hand histories of spots you may be confused about before we do a sweat of your play so I have an idea of where your at, your skills, what you need to work on etc.

After watching you play, I can give you some feedback on your play and review some of the big/interesting hands that I think you played well or hands you could have played better. I'll try to explain the reasoning behind plays and what the pros/cons of doing certain moves are. I will also mention timing tells that you or your opponents have and I will have a better feel for the optimal move in the hands being played since I'll be able to feel game flow better.

For The next session, I think its a good idea to once again go over hand histories of big hands you played that you won/lost (preferably recently so that you have the game flow fresh in your head rather than going over hands where you are just telling me statistics on villains) or hands where you were lost and confused on what to do in the hand. I will go over any important concepts I think you should learn and also provide some of my own interesting hand histories to provide insight on my decision making process.
I can give you more theory in this type of session and help walk you through my thought processes and the questions I am asking when deciding what the right move is. This type of session really helps the student understand the theories of poker and if the student truly understands the theories then in any situation he or she will have an idea of what the correct move(s) are.

After that we will do either sweat sessions or hand history/theory review depending on what you feel is better.

Pricing

If you negotiate a set number of hours before hand at a certain price then that will be the price per hour you will pay for that block of hours even if I decide to change my hourly charge.

I don't do any lesson minimums because I don’t want to force students to pay for training that they feel that they do not need so feel free to buy an hour at a time, but keep in mind that buying one hour at a time with periods in-between without coaching is not going to help your game as much and will probably lower your potential results / learning speed as well.
